Proudly crafting ales and lagers in Sheffield, MA since 2012. Here is our story...
We (Bill Heaton & Christine Bump) met working for Victory Brewing Company in 2003. We both had some experience at smaller breweries before, and one of us (Christine) actually has a diploma for brewing from the Siebel Institute and the Doemens Academy! With this background we set out to start our own brewpub and in 2005 we opened the Pittsfield Brew Works. After five years of fun and hard work we decided to leave the brewpub business to try to start a production brewery dedicated to making just beer and smiles. It took some time, but with a ton of help and support from our friends and families just as we were about to give up we found our new home. 65 Silver St. needed a bit of elbow grease to get it to what it is now, and in the fall of 2012 we brewed our first batch of beer. Since then we have been focused on bringing our neighbors fresh quality beer. We want to thank everyone who has helped us get to this point and everyone who is supporting us now. You are OUR ROOTS.
"He Who Plants a Tree Plants Hope"
At the end of our street on the side of Route 7 there is a plaque that commemorates the "big elm" of Sheffield. This is where the massive tree that gives us our name stood for almost 400 years. Before there was a town hall the people of Sheffield would meet under the tree which could give shade to hundreds. While the tree no longer stands, we hope to embody the spirit of what it meant by giving people something with
which to gather around and enjoy each others' company.
Our Tap Room is open from 12-7 on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for pints and beer to go. We do free tours on Saturdays and Sundays. We have beer to sell by the six pack & four pack or we can fill growlers. We are here throughout the week if you would like to come in and buy some beer or fill a growler, but keep in mind we may be brewing, canning or something else so please bear with us, thanks.
We are also just down the street from our friends at Berkshire Mountain Distillers, they have a tasting room and they do tours as well so definitely plan on checking them out while you are in the area.
In the area
The Berkshires are an amazing place with great people, views, eats, hikes, drinks, etc. If you are coming here to visit the brewery please try to enjoy some of the other great stuff. There are places to hike from a nice stroll at Bartholomew's Cobble to the workout you can get going up Monument Mountain and many others. Skiing at the hills of Butternut, Catamount, Jiminy Peak up north and a handful of other small places is awesome in the winter and the Bike and Board shop can help you get around on snow or asphalt. There are so many great museums like the MASSive MASS MoCA up north to so many other great little treasures in every town. If you like live entertainment then you probably have heard of Tanglewood or Jacob's Pillow Dance for good reason, but there are also theaters and festivals all over the place. If you need a place to stay there are heaps of great B&Bs as well as many other options including the historic Red Lion Inn and of course the Berkshires are home to some of the best chefs in the country so go get some food. We also have some other friends in the beer biz around such as Wandering Star in Pittsfield, the solar brewed Barrington Brewery and many others all over Western MA, check them out and support them too, we love beer and we want more of it just like you. We hope you enjoy your time in this amazing place that we call home. Cheers!
